The Education Component for Au Pairs

The U.S. Department of State requires that all au pairs must complete 6 credits (or its equivalent if it is a non-credit course 72-90 hours) at an accredited post-secondary institution over the course of their year. Host families are responsible for contributing up to $500 of this cost. Host families are also responsible for facilitating enrollment, providing time off and transportation, (cost of gas, Uber expense, parking fee’s) so that their au pair can attend these courses.

Here is a list of popular options available to au pairs in the Denver Metro Area AND the WEEKEND  COURSES

Are you interested in auditing a class?

Are you interested in taking a course for fun?  No exams?  No homework?  Just a chance to learn about something that interests you?

In that case, you may be interested in auditing a course.  Auditing a college course involves almost everything required when taking a college class for credit; however, you are not evaluated for class participation, you do not need to complete all of the assignments, you do not receive a final grade, and no academic record is maintained. Courses may be audited without credit with the consent of the instructor and if seats are available. See the MSU Denver South Campus complete course schedule, Fall 2019, South Campus Class Schedule

Once you have found a course, complete the Audit/No Credit Registration Form, take it with you the first night of class to request permission from the instructor to audit the class.  Once they agree and sign off on the form, proceed to our Student Information Desk, Room LL06, for payment.  Once paid, you may go back to class and the instructor will be notified that you have completed the process to audit the class.  At the end of the semester (or class if accelerated), you will receive a Certificate of Acknowledgement signed by the instructor.

HOW TO AUDIT A COURSE Students may audit a class with the permission of the instructor and if seating is available. Academic credit is not awarded for an audited course and no academic record is maintained. Students may audit a course at MSU Denver South Campus by completing the Audit Approval Form on page 25 and submitting the form. The cost is $95 per credit hour. For more information visit our website at msudenver.edu/ innovative-lifelong-learning/audit a course or contact the MSU Denver South Campus at 303-721-1313.

Course audits are also available on MSU Denver’s Main Campus.  for more information, visit the Office of the Registrar.  Please note:  The cost for a course audit on the Main campus differs from courses audits offered on the South Campus.

AuPair Weekend CLASSES

BENEFITS TO THE WEEKEND COURSE OPTION: Can receive 3 or 6 credits per weekend depending on the weekend you choose to attend!

CREDIT HOURS ARE CHANGING! Beginning in August 2019, APW courses will provide the following educational hours:

36 hours for 3-day single courses

60 or 72 hours for 4-day combo courses

72 hours for double weekends

These will be the only options for certification letters, beginning in August. See Questions and Policies for more information. (These hours are already in place for LA and NYC.)

All of our courses are offered through accredited institutions of higher education. It’s easy to earn all of the educational hours required for one year by completing one or two of our weekend classes!

Weekend courses are the perfect solution for working au pairs. We pack a lot into our courses so you can earn your hours in a short period of time. We also make it possible to take a course that fits into an au pair budget better than most schools.

Feel free to join the Waitlist, if available on the registration form when a course is sold out. If you choose to do this, you will not be charged until you are approved for registration.

FUTURE dates without registration links are tentative and not guaranteed. DO NOT buy airfare or non-refundable housing until you have actually registered for a weekend course.

What are your courses about?

Our weekend courses are designed to help you get the most out of your year in the U.S.

“Make a Difference” explores topics such as culture shock, goals for au pairs, diversity in the U.S., communities and service-learning, stereotypes and conflict resolution. Students also get to participate in a community service experience.

“Discover Your City” dives into U.S. history, politics, holidays and rituals while comparing the US to countries from all over the world. You will also become an expert on your selected city where the class is held.

“Explore our Environment” turns you into an environmental scientist for the weekend as you explore topics such as conservation, environmental tourism, healthy habitats, water chemistry, and wilderness geocaching.

“Arts and Entertainment” explores how the entertainment industry has influenced American culture and history while allowing you to experience the “creative capitals of the world.” Interactive workshops and field trips give you a chance to participate in the Visual or Performing arts depending on which track you choose.

For each course, several excursions are scheduled throughout the weekend, so you can learn more about the city where your course takes place and explore class topics in an interesting and educational way.
